Overview of Agency
The Federal Court of Australia (the Entity) is a non-Corporate listed entity for the purposes of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act) and a statutory agency for the purposes of the Public Service Act 1999. The Entity supports the operations of the Federal Court of Australia (FCA), Family Court of Australia (FCoA), the Federal Circuit Court of Australia (FCC) and the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT). The FCA, FCoA and FCC are Chapter III Courts under the Australian Constitution and continue to operate as individual judicial jurisdictions.

Position Overview
Working under limited supervision, the Judgments Coordinator is responsible for managing the publication of Federal Court judgments to ensure all judgments from the Court and associated tribunals are published within the correct standards.
This is a high-volume, high-pressure role that includes regular liaison with judge’s staff as well as managing two part-time judgment publishing officers.

Major Activities

  1. Manage and coordinate publication of incoming judgments to the Court’s website and intranet and distribute to legal publishers within agreed timeframes.
  2. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of judgments subject matter and advise judges and staff accordingly, applying diplomacy, tact and discretion.
  3. Support judges and staff during the judgments creation process, including trouble-shooting first-level judgment template issues.
  4. Manage two part-time judgment publishing officers.
  5. Deliver training programs and participate in the creation of eLearning modules.
  6. Maintain other judgments information on the website and intranet e.g. High Court Special Leave Applications.
  7. Participate in projects relating to judgments e.g. new judgments system, new judgment template releases.
  8. Recommend changes to systems and processes in order to improve efficiencies e.g. changes to the judgment style guide and communicate to judges and staff, as required.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to deal with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds, often under difficult circumstances.
  • The ability to work autonomously and demonstrate initiative, flexibility and sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including working collaboratively with judges and staff on judgment publishing issues.

Formal Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in Information Management are desirable.

Selection Criteria

  1. Work independently – demonstrated ability to work under broad supervision to deliver services, and to manage and respond to change – but to also work cooperatively as part of a team and share information.
  2. Experience in information systems – e.g. judgments, intranets or library systems, in a legal environment; and an understanding of the importance of data integrity for the retrieval of information.
  3. Superior client focus – balancing client expectations within the limitation of available resources.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – with the ability to influence people at higher levels e.g. judges and staff.
  5. Expertise in the use of technology – including standard desktop applications, particularly MS Word, HTML and image editing software, and using judgment templates, or the ability to quickly acquire this skill.
  6. Training delivery – experience in delivering training programs.
  7. Highly motivated – a highly motivated approach to work, with the ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining high standards.
  8. Other – legal research skills, knowledge of judgment publication and reporting, and an understanding of the federal courts and their roles is highly desirable. 

Eligibility
Employment with the Federal Court of Australia is subject to the requirement of the Public Service Act 1999. The following requirements also apply:

  • Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must be an Australian citizenship, unless the Chief Operating Officer waives that requirement.
  • National Police Check – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check, and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.
  • Health clearance – the successful applicant must be fit for duties and will be required to complete a health declaration and may be required to attend a medical assessment to confirm their fitness for duty.
